As humans, our purpose is to participate as fully as possible in LOVE within the concrete particulars of our lives.

It is our privilege and responsibility to develop the physiological, psychological, and spiritual freedom to do so.

For as long as I can remember, I have been a spiritual seeker - seeking language, understanding, and connection to this sense of belonging to something so much bigger than myself. From fascination with the rituals and traditions of my Catholic upbringing, to the longing for personal connection within non-denominational Christian communities, to the integration of my own personal mystical experiences of the Sacred presence, to the study and dialogue with other religious and wisdom traditions, this exploration of the spiritual life has been the richest and truest expression of myself.

As any authentic spiritual journey does, this led me to seek integration between my inner and outer lives - and work towards a world of greater compassion, love, and justice. After years of direct service and activism work, I came to understand how important it is to remain grounded and connected to your sense of meaning and purpose in the work, your hope, and your community. You need a life of depth to sustain you in this work.

And then, I stumbled across a line in The Mystic Heart by Wayne Teasdale: The definitive revolution is the spiritual awakening of human kind.In an instant, this single sentence provided a narrative for me that I knew would direct my work in the world moving forward. Given the particularities of my own life - my gifts and longings, my growing edges and limitations, my social location - it became clear in that moment that the invitation to me was to support the transformation of the world through the transformation of the lives of individuals. Since then, I have been accompanying others on their inner journeys.

The deeper I journeyed into my own inner landscape, and the more I accompanied others within theirs, the clearer it became to me that we are all built for LOVE. Not just this fleeting feeling we may get when we are experiencing some form of pleasure, but rather LOVE as an energy that arises out of connection. This energy emerges from connections when the deepest, most authentic part of ourselves encounters the deepest, truest part of another. By definition, energy is the capacity to do work. Love accomplishes things. Love moves and changes things. Participating in this energy of love, then, is what makes the transformation and evolution of ourselves and the world possible.

This type of connection is an act of radical vulnerability and trust. As humans, we quickly learn through our experiences that we can be hurt when we engage with the world with this level of openness. These experiences of harm live within our physiology and keep us stuck. On top of that, to defend ourselves from experiencing this again, we erect psychological and spiritual barriers that we believe will keep us safe. We turn to efforts to control our environment and relationships to protect ourselves.

Sophia means WISDOM. Across the East and West, all major spiritual wisdom traditions offer paths of transformation towards fuller participation in love. And, there is much wisdom within the field of modern psychology around what enhances and inhibits our capacity to connect with others. My hope and intention with Sophia Counseling is to draw from a variety of wisdom sources as we explore together what may need to be transformed within you, so that you have the freedom to participate as fully as possible to the invitations of love within your life.

Come, let’s seek love together, and transform the world.
